Business Transfer Panel
As many owners of contracting businesses are reaching retirement age, the topic of how to sell a business or transfer it to family members is a critical subject. This panel of four current owners who have taken control of an existing business will share their experiences and the challenges they encountered before, during and after taking over. Their stories will help shed light on a number of issues that can complicate or even derail the transfer, or create costly issues for the new owner that can last for years.
About John and Vicki La Plant (Moderators)
Vicki and John La Plant have over 35 years of HVAC and plumbing industry experience working with all sizes of contractors and learning the best practices, systems and ideas from the very best. Vicki received the Tom McCart Consultant of the year award in 2013. Vicki and John, are co-recipients of the distinguished Servant Leader award from Service Roundtable. After 20 years of owning a consulting and training company specifically focused on the contracting industry, Vicki and John joined Service Nation Inc. in 2016 as business coaches and trainers. The ideas and tools from their training seminars are practical and easily applied in the real world of contracting.
John and Vicki La Plant are currently Business Consultants and Advisory Board Moderators for the Service Nation Alliance, a group that helps service contractors increase their business and financial performance, leading to a profitable exit strategy.
About Alana Ward (Panelist)
Alana Ward is the 2nd generation owner of Baggett Heating & Cooling, an HVAC residential replacement company in Clarksville, TN. She has been in the industry since 2001 and owner of Baggett since 2006. Three years ago, Alana undertook a complete rebranding of her company and the evidence of its success can be measured by the company’s growth. With her vision, planning and persistence, she has grown the business over 25% year-over-year for the last two years. She has been a member of the Alliance since 2014. In addition to ownership responsibilities, Alana is also the company’s replacement sales representative. She was recognized as ContractingBusiness.com’s HVAC Woman of the Year in 2012.
About Kevin Frump (Panelist)
Kevin Frump has been a part of Illiana Heating & Air Conditioning in Cedar Lake, IN for over 8 years. He became an owner at the company in 2017. Kevin did not grow up in HVAC, but his background in engineering and information systems allows a unique perspective on the industry he now calls home.
Follower of Christ, husband to a wonderful woman, and father to 5, Kevin also understands and appreciates the importance of the balance between work and life.
About Tom Peregrino (Panelist)
“Tom Peregrino is President of Daffan Mechanical in Granbury, Texas. The business employs around 32 team members, performing residential (90%) and light commercial HVAC.
Tom started in the HVAC industry as a sales rep in 1996. Over time he progressed to Sales Manager, Install Manager then General Manager. In 2010 he and his partner, David Daffan, bought out the original owner of Daffan Mechanical. Tom’s role is to provide the vision for the organization, support his Leadership Team and ensure the consistent performance of their Core Values. In the last 8 years they have averaged 10% growth annually.
Tom’s long term goals are to continue to expand their market-share into multiple cities and help the Service Nation Alliance organization. He and his wife, Lisa, have been married 26 years and they have two daughters.”
About Kelly Schols (Panelist)
Kelly Schols is the President and Owner of CPI Plumbing and Heating in Mount Vernon, WA.
Kelly Started his Plumbing/HVAC career in 1982 during a work program in high school. He has been with CPI since 1990 and bought out longtime mentor, Steve Olsen, in April 2001. He is involved in Best Practice Groups throughout the plumbing and HVAC industry and does coaching and mentoring for those groups. Kelly is also a Dave Ramsey Qualified Financial Master Coach and a Facilitator for the Core Financial Wellness Program.
In 2013 Kelly received special recognition, along with CPI, as the North American Plumbing Contractor of the year; and in 2014, Kelly received the prestigious George Brazil Trailblazer Award for having the most innovative business practices in the Plumbing and HVAC industry. Kelly enjoys giving back to the communities that have supported CPI over the years by supporting and sponsoring local youth programs and donating to many local charities.
